The Fascinating Journey of the Grapefruit

The grapefruit, scientifically known as Citrus paradisi, carries a name that reflects its bright, tropical heritage linked to the sun-drenched islands of the Caribbean. Pomelo: From Ancient Origins to Global Delight

The origin of the pomelo can be traced back to the region of Malaysia and Indonesia, where it grew wild and was likely cultivated. Different types of grapefruits

The grapefruit, one of the largest members of the citrus family, measures up to 5 or 6 inches in diameter. The fruit is so named because John Luman recorded this name in 1814 in his Hortus Jamaicensis ‘on account of its resemblance in flavor to the grape.’

About 1809, a Spanish nobleman, ‘Don Philippe’ migrated to Florida and settled near Green Springs. He was said to have brought grapefruit seeds with him and from them, to have developed a small grove, the first grapefruit planting in the state.

It then became an important crop in the early 1900s, in the southern United States. The grapefruit is closely associated with the pummelo, probably originating in the West Indies a few centuries ago.

There are two types of grapefruit, white fleshed (pink) and pigmented (red), differentiated more by the color of their flesh than their skin.

Fresh grapefruit of both types can be found in the market year-round because the fruits ripen at different times in Texas, Florida, California, and Arizona.

The meat or pulp of the white grapefruit is actually pale yellow or bond in color. The rind will be from pale to rich yellow in hue. The flesh should have an assertive tangy tart flavor with some underlying bitterness.

Red grapefruit should be the sweetest grapefruits available and are in great demand when in season. It has risen to bright-pink flesh and pink-tinged yellow skin.

Grapefruit could lower your high blood pressure

High blood pressure occurs when fats, cholesterol, and nutrients in the food you eat start to accumulate along your artery walls. This narrowing of the arteries restricts the flow of the blood, increases blood pressure and making the body more susceptible to heart attacks and strokes.

It is believed by researchers that grapefruit enzymes help to control insulin increases that happen after you eat. These enzymes help digest your food better and this results in less nutrients being stored as fat.

Grapefruit has also been found to be caner preventative. It's the phytonutrients - antioxidants - and especially lycopene that has been found helpful in preventing cancer. A 123 gm serving contains 159 mg of potassium, 14 mg calcium, 10 mg of magnesium, trace amount of sodium is high in calories and sugar and is a rich source of vitamins A and C.

Grapefruit and its juice have been popular worldwide for their refreshing flavor and beneficial health effects. Grapefruit, common name for the fruit of a variety of citrus. The variety probably originated in Jamaica; it was introduced to Florida in the 16th century by Spaniards.

The grapefruit is an evergreen tree, Citrus paradise, of the Rutaceae family, and its fruit is the largest of the commercially grown citrus fruit.

Grapefruits are borne on small trees that rarely exceed 6 m (20 ft) in height. The dense foliage consists of shiny, dark-green leaves with winged petioles. The large white flowers produce yellow, globe-shaped fruit in grapelike clusters.

The grapefruit is known for its sour to semi-sour flavor, It contains grapefruit mercaptan, a sulphur, which in turn contain sterpene, influencing its flavor.

The fruits vary from 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) in diameter and consist of a juicy, acid pulp surrounded by a leathery rind. The color of the pulp is normally light yellow, but a few pink-pulped varieties have been developed.

More than 20 varieties of grapefruit have been propagated in the United States. The major yellow-pulped varieties are Duncan and Marsh; the major pink-pulped varieties are Ruby and Webb.

The grapefruit is readily crossed with other members of the citrus genus. The tangelo, a Florida juice fruit, was produced by fertilization of grapefruit flowers with mandarin orange pollen.

The highest consumption of grapefruit and its juice is in China and the United States, being commonly served at breakfast.

In the United States, grapefruit juice is regularly consumed by about 21% of all households. It has been reported that about half of the total grapefruit production in the United States is mainly processed into juice.

Grapefruit ripens slowly over a long period and will hang on the tree for several months after it has reached edible quality.

Best quality grapefruit is almost always produced in areas with high average temperatures during the summer growing period.

The fresh weight of mature grapefruit consists of 35 to 50 percent juice, with remainder made up of peel, rag, and seeds.

The fresh juice consists of 88 to 93 per cent water, 8 to 13 percent soluble solids and small amounts of insoluble solids.

Grapefruit juice has a harsher flavor that is more resistant to changes brought about through processing and storage. Some of this harshness is due to the bitterness and higher level of acidity present.

Sugars (sucrose and reducing) and acids constitute 85 to 90 percent of the soluble solids; the other solids, soluble and insoluble, are mainly vitamins, minerals alts amino acids, proteins, fats, pectin and glycosides.

Researchers found that a diet supplemented with red grapefruits was effective in lowering triglycerides, a blood fat that is risk factor for heart disease.

Those eating the red grapefruit also found to lower their LDL by 20 percent.

The grapefruit is a breakfast staple. Americans slice the fruit into halves, add sugar, and spoon out sections for consumption. Grapefruit is popular addition to fruit salad, fruit cups, Jell-O, pudding and tarts.
