Apples industry in United States

The first apple orchards in North America were probably planted in New England on colonial farms in the early 1600s, but apple seeds from Europe were also spread along the trade routes of First Nation communities.

Apples are popular because of the many ways that they can be consumed and because of their convenience and durability. Apples may be eaten off the tree or stored for up to a full year. Apples can be processed into sauce, slices, or juice and are favored for pastries, cakes, tarts, and pies.

In United States, apples are grown in practically every state. They are grown commercially in 35 states with the heaviest production taking place in Washington, New York, Virginia, Michigan, California, and Pennsylvania.

The Washington state apple industry is the largest in the country and includes the most efficient U.S. apple producers.

U.S. apple farming and packing has become both more concentrated and more productive as acreage continues to decline. One apple variety, the Red Delicious, com-prises 41 percent of the entire American apple crop, and eleven varieties produce 90 percent of all apples sold in chain grocery stores.
