Fruit of mulberry

The genus Morus, to which the mulberry belongs, is a small one, not more than ten species now being recognized. Mulberries have been widely planted for reasons other than for their fruit. Three distinct tree fruits are known as mulberries.

White mulberries have been planted for their leaves as silkworm fodder. White mulberry was introduced to America in early colonial times.

The red mulberry native to the eastern seaboard of North America. Bears fruits smaller than those of the white mulberry. It was introduce from Asia over a century ago. Both red mulberry and white mulberry are very sweet. Use in pies, jams, jellies. Use like other berries in bread, muffins, cakes.

The black mulberry, which is unknown in the wild state, was introduced to Europe and then to North America from warmer areas of western Asia.

The ripe fruit is delicious eaten out of hand also can be made into wine. In medieval England, mulberries were made into murrey, a blue-black puree added to spiced meats or used as a pudding.

The black mulberry are virtually stalkless and usually purple or black when ripe. The best tasting of all mulberry and perhaps the best tasting of all fruits is black mulberry.
